The Functions and Uses of Diethylene Glycol

**As a Solvent:** Diethylene glycol can effectively dissolve a variety of organic substances and, as a solvent, helps improve product quality. It is used as a solvent in industries such as textiles, printing and dyeing, leather, and papermaking. Diethylene glycol is also used as a solvent for nitrocellulose, resins, oils and fats, and printing inks.

**As a Plasticizer:** In the plastics and resin industry, diethylene glycol is commonly used as a plasticizer, especially in the production of unsaturated polyester resins and polyurethane, where it improves the flexibility and durability of products. Diethylene glycol is also used as a plasticizer for rubber and resins.

**As an Intermediate in Chemical Reactions:** Diethylene glycol has high hydroxyl reactivity and plays an important role as an intermediate in chemical synthesis. It can undergo esterification, etherification, and oxidation reactions with acids and bases, and is used to produce various surfactants, plasticizers, emulsifiers, and other chemical products such as ethers, acids, esters, and amines.

**As an Antifreeze Agent:** In antifreeze formulations, diethylene glycol is often used as a low-temperature protectant. It lowers the freezing point of water, preventing mechanical equipment from freezing in low-temperature environments. Diethylene glycol is also used as an antifreeze component in brake fluids and compressor lubricating oils.

**As a Lubricant:** Diethylene glycol has good lubricating properties and is widely used in metal processing and mechanical lubrication, effectively reducing friction and extending equipment service life.

**Applications in the Cosmetics Industry:** Diethylene glycol can penetrate the outer layer of the skin and provide moisturizing effects, so it is often used as a humectant, solvent, and stabilizer.

**Role in Inks:** Diethylene glycol plays multiple important roles in inks, including stabilizing emulsions, maintaining ink wetting, and adjusting viscosity. It forms a liquid mixture with various colorants and other additives, allowing for good regulation of the overall performance of the ink. As a wetting agent in inks, diethylene glycol improves ink flow and viscosity quality (making it more fluid and manageable). It can penetrate ink particles and create affinity with their surfaces, allowing colorants and other additives to be evenly distributed across the wetting surface, resulting in more uniform application of the ink on printing materials. Diethylene glycol acts as a dispersing solvent in water-based inks. It has certain hydrophilicity and can react with the lipophilic groups in dye molecules, causing the decomposition and dispersion of the dyes. Diethylene glycol can form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, making it easier for dye molecules in water-based inks to be surrounded and dispersed by water.

**Role in Adhesives:** In adhesives, diethylene glycol increases the stickiness and fluidity of the glue. By adding an appropriate amount of diethylene glycol, the glue can more easily form a uniform coating layer, and the adhesive strength is increased, thereby improving the quality of the adhesive.

**Role in Polyurethane:** Diethylene glycol is an important solvent in polyurethane synthesis. It effectively dissolves other raw materials, making the reaction system homogeneous. It can be used as a chain extender in polyurethane. By reacting with isocyanates to form urethane groups, diethylene glycol increases the molecular weight of polyurethane. The reaction between diethylene glycol and isocyanates not only causes chain extension but also forms crosslinked structures. Crosslinked polyurethane has higher strength and wear resistance and is widely used in the preparation of adhesives, coatings, and coating materials.

The above are the functions and uses of diethylene glycol. It should be noted that diethylene glycol has certain toxicity, and long-term exposure may have adverse effects on the human body. Therefore, during the use of diethylene glycol, operating procedures should be strictly followed, and personal protection should be ensured.
