Uses and Applications of n-Propanol*

**N-Propanol (n-propanol), also known as 1-propanol, is an organic compound with a variety of uses. It is mainly used as a solvent, chemical intermediate, fuel, and as an important raw material in several industrial fields.**

**The main roles and uses of n-propanol are as follows:**

**Solvent:** N-Propanol can be used as a solvent in organic synthesis and is widely used in products such as coatings, paints, adhesives, cosmetics, plastics, and fungicides. It can also replace ethanol, which has a lower boiling point, as a solvent. It plays a particularly important role as a solvent for polyamide inks used in printing on plastic films.

**Pharmaceutical and Pesticide Production:** N-Propanol is an important intermediate in the production of pharmaceuticals and pesticides, used to synthesize various drugs and pesticides. For example, it is used in the production of drugs such as erythromycin, probenecid, and sodium valproate, as well as pesticides like oryzalin and pebulate.

**Food Additives and Fragrances:** Synthesized ester compounds, such as n-propyl acetate, can be used as food additives, plasticizers, and fragrances. Furthermore, n-propyl acetate is also an important component of the lithium battery electrolyte used in new energy vehicles.

**Cleaners and Preservatives:** N-Propanol is also a component of some cleaners and preservatives.

**Fuel:** N-Propanol can be mixed with alkanes and alkenes for use as a fuel to increase the combustion temperature.

**Other Uses:** N-Propanol is also used in industries such as nitrocellulose lacquers, cosmetics, dental rinses, insecticides, fungicides, inks, and plastics, as well as a reagent for chromatographic analysis.

**It is important to note that n-propanol is harmful to humans.** Exposure to high concentrations of vapor can cause headache, drowsiness, ataxia (loss of coordination), and irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat. Ingestion can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, drowsiness, coma, and even death. Prolonged skin contact can cause dryness and cracking of the skin. Therefore, appropriate safety measures should be taken when handling n-propanol.
